Introduction

It is important to protect, (sometimes when you have that stuff on you machine), your windows directories/folder from simple access. But making the file/folder hidden from Folder Options does not always work.
The article is about using your own windows environment in a better way. Here I will introduce a concept of folder locking.

The samples are tested on Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2

You should…
- be a computer literate
- know a little bit of dos command and how to run them in windows environment

What we will use…
I will use the Class IDs that can be found in registry to identify programs and I will associate those Class IDs to the folders to make them hidden from the others. Do not play with Registries if you are not very aware of the things. To help you out, I am giving some of the Class IDs that you can use to protect your folders.

* Locked Folder: {2559a1f2-21d7-11d4-bdaf-00c04f60b9f0}
* Control Panel: {21EC2020-3AEA-1069-A2DD-08002B30309D}
* Internet Explorer: {2559a1f4-21d7-11d4-bdaf-00c04f60b9f0}
* Recycle Bin: {645FF040-5081-101B-9F08-00AA002F954E}
* Help Browser: {2559a1f1-21d7-11d4-bdaf-00c04f60b9f0}
* Network Places: {7007ACC7-3202-11D1-AAD2-00805FC1270E}

? If you are not aware with these Class IDs, I will suggest you to select the 2 Class ID (i.e. Control Panel) and go ahead.

Let’s be in action…
Ok now let’s stop every thing else and reveal the real logic behind the concept… Go to the command prompt and type:

C:\move "c:\My Folder" "c:\My Folder.{21EC2020-3AEA-1069-A2DD-08002B30309D}"

It’s Important…
It is important to remember which Class ID is associated with which directory. If you forget the Class ID associated with a particular folder/directory. Extra programming efforts would be required to bring the folder/directory to its original state.
